340boy...how do you like the 17 cal.? Been thinking about one in a Ruger bolt, but sitting on my hands due to the explosive nature of the 22 hornet I have and the obvious usefullness of the 22 LR. Let me know. Thanks.

Skipper...what about a 30-378 in your poll?

340boy
02-26-2006, 20:36
30-378,
I love my 17HMR. I have it zeroed for 100 yds, only drops about 6 inches or so at 200, I have "killed" milk bottles at 300 yds with it, not bad for a rimfire!!
I have a leupold VXII 4-12 fine duplex which seems to suit it nicely. I like it for rabbits and chucks when I dont want the noise of my 223 but need more reach than my kimber 22 LR can provide. A very accurate round as well.

Well I've just changed my cal  .
No longer getting a 338-378,still getting a Accumark but now in 340Wby Mag.

Fare wait from the US on these(338-378),& always liked the 340Wby cal, which are in stock.Thought bugger-it that will do.
On the plus side components are abit cheaper but you do loose a little power :(
No brake this time :D & a hell of alot cheaper($250Aus) in this combo.Should be in my hot hands soon.

I just dropped into my local dealer and he had a 7mm Weatherby Mark V sitting there with a Weatherby Premier scope on it for 479 dollars. What could I do? Here is the list: 22-250 Rem. (Ruger M 77 MK 2)
243 Win (Huskvarna)
257 Weatherby Vanguard (My first Weatherby)
270 Win (Model 70)
7mm Rem Mag (Remington Mod. 700)
7mm Weatherby MK V
30-30 Win (pre-64 Mod. 94)
30-06 (Savage 110 custom stock)
300 Win. Mag. (Remington Mod. 700)
32 Win Spl. (pre-64 Mod. 94)
338 Win Mag (Ruger M 77 MK 2)
375 H&H (Remington Mod. 700)
50 cal. blk powder (Thompson Center)
54 cal. blk powder (Thompson Center)
12ga. Winchester Mod. 1300 pump
357 mag (Ruger Blackhawk)
44 mag (Ruger Super-Blackhawk)
44 cal. blk powder (Ruger Old-Army)
This is the list....so far. I reload my own so it makes things less costly. I could stop and sell everything which would help pay for my grad school classes but.................. that would not be wise. A person needs to get into the wild and get away from the city. If you happen to go during hunting season, so much the better. Life is good! God Bless!

G'day Lads. I'm new to the site so look forward to reading about some of your experience with your big guns. I have just ordered a rifle in .300WM. After a big hunt last year were I was being asked to shoot at big game at 400metres plus with a .270Win, I decided something with a bit more grunt was required! Si I hope to be practicing in a few weeks!

So the new rifle is a .300 Weatherby with a Leupold VX-L 4.5-14x56mm.

Also in the gunroom are the following:
Leige .410 double shotgun SxS with external hammers, twin trigger, a joy to carry and hunt bunnies, ducks and the odd fox
Custom Martini .22LR with Leupold 20x40mm
Marlin .22 Magnum with Tasco 4x40mm
Remington VSSF .220 Swift with Leupold 6.5-20x40mm
Winchester M70 Featherweight .308 Win with Leupold 1.5-5x20mm
Brno ZKK602 customised .450 Ackley Magnum, sometimes with 1.5-5x, sometimes open sighted just for fun!

I would love to hear about some experiences anyone has had out hunting with there big weatherby. Anything exciting or perhaps some serious long range shooting out on the plains? Look forward to sharing a few yarns Lots of photos and stories to tell here!!

Dan.

Make sure which ever scope you buy has good eye relief as Weatherby cartridges are known to kick a little ;) ... I put a Leupold VX III on my 338-378 for that reason... The only time there is an intimidation problem is with the magnification maxed out where the relief is only 3.6 inches... The Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 has a constant eye relief of 4 inches so you might want to check one of those out... The other Zeiss scopes do not offer this much eye relief... The Leupolds are fairly consistent between 3.6 and 4.6 inches depending on magnification... Enjoy the shopping...

I am currently dealing on the Zeiss COnquest in 3-9x40 Mil Dot. Any opinions? The other one is Leupold 3.5-10x40 VX-III. Leupold mount and Rings for both.

Also the dealer got back to me on a laminate stainless Vanguard. Are the Laminates as good or better than the Synthetic?

Thanks Again

I also have a 25.06 that was hand built by Bliss Titus for my Great Grandfather, passed on to my father and now to me. More accurate than me but with the Weatherby Gauarantee of 1.5" at 100 yds, the new addition will likely be more accurate than me as well.

I should have most North American game covered with the new 300 with a nice white tail / muley/ speed goat rifle to use as well.

Can't go wrong with either scope... I went Leupold because I KNEW it would stand up to the punishment... I've heard nothing but good about the Zeiss scopes and the glass is quite good, so it's your choice... Simply compare with varying light conditions and choose which one you like best...

I didn't know that there was a laminate stock for the Vanguards but then it might be a third party stock... Laminate stocks are very good as they are kinda the best of both worlds... They are wood but they are also resins which keeps the outside world outside... On the other hand if you are refering to the composite stocks that Weatherby offers they are VERY good...

Enjoy your new toy and that wonderful sounding 25-06 of yours (nothing like a good rifle with history)....

Well I guess I'll start here, Hello from Vancouver Island BC Canada.
I am new to the Weatherby Forum and for that matter a Weatherby Cartridge as well.
I haven't handled a Weatherby rifle ever and am a fan of the Browning rifles, earlier this year I was looking at finally adding a .338 Magnum to the locker, wanted something other than a 338 Win Mag, so I went with a 340Wby Mag, had a custom Canadian stainless barrel prepared for a Browning BBR and whalla I got my Browning and Weatherby all in one, best of both worlds for me.

I wish I had found this site earlier when I was working out all the details of the build, but I am extremely happy with the results of this rifle and caliber.
The barrel sits at 26.75" in length and tosses 250g Hornadys & Sierra's very well.
I understand that Weatherby had Browning discontinue the production of the BBR rifles because of the similarities between the Mark V and the BBR, basically Weatherby told Browning to stop copying them, it wasn't hard to do since both rifles were being produced in the same factory at the time.So I feel very luck to have had the opportunity to have had this combo created.

I look forward to reading all the tid bits of info and stories this forum has to offer.
Brian

P.S. not sure why it says 224 Weatherby Mag under my call name, but that's not right considering the that call name.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!
The caliber you have chosen is perfect to big game. Hope you will enjoy the 340!
The "224 Weatherby Magnum" text you got under your username is a ranking system, from 224 to 460. The more threads you write, the higher ranking you get.

Best Regards

Great choice on the .340!! You'd be hard pressed to find anything better for an all-round big game caliber than either the .300 or the .340 Weatherby!

I'll have to look into the Browning BBR's because I didn't remember how similar they were to the Weatherby's.

If my memory serves Me right, I believe the problem was the bolt. It had 9 lugs in three rows, just like the MK V. I also believe this rifle was produced in the 60's?

340_or_nothing
09-17-2007, 15:08
The rifle was produced in a factory in Japan, between 1978 - 1984.
Mine is dated 1979, and when I got the rifle it had been sitting in some ones safe ever since then, it might have had 20 rounds through it, not a scratch on it, and it used to be 7mm Rem Mag, before I started on it, well actually the G-smith did the work, I had the idea.
These were the rifles produced before the first A-Bolts, BBR stands for Browning Bolt Rifle.
They are a bit heavier than some rifles, but since it's a 340 that's OK.
Yes, the bolt does have nine locking lugs, 3 rows of 3, and is nicely fluted.
The bolt is either a 54 degree throw or 60 degree throw, it feel like shorter bolt throw than my A-Bolt II, nice and short anyway.
The Walnut stock came with a factory aluminum bedding block, these rifles were notorious for their accuracy right out of the box, and that was a big thing back in those days.
Before I had it converted to the 340, I ran a box of elcheapo Federal 7mm 175g down range, at 200 yards from a sand bag, the groups were between 1.25" and .75", and that's still the same with the 340, providing I hold still enough.
I've used this rifle on Grouse to deer so far, still waiting on a successful sheep hunt.
Glad to be here.

JB257460
09-17-2007, 15:24
Well, I guess if you had to use a rifle on a flushing Grouse then a .340 is just as good as any!! :D Make sure the scope is set at the lowest power so you can pick up on their flight line easier!!!

Sounds like an awesome rifle!

340_or_nothing
09-17-2007, 21:30
No flight shots yet, the bullet path would usually be somewhere that I'm not sure of so I won't shoot like that, just head/neck shots from a far.
Scope is a Vari-X III 4.5-14 X 40 AO with fine duplex, the spare/backup scope is a Vari-X III 3.5-10 X 40 AO. Was going to set these up in the Leupold QR system, but haven't done that yet, the scope sits in a set of Burris signature rings right now.

That is one nice rifle and 340Wby a classic Weatherby. Nice, that's cool. :D

I've got a Vanguard SS in 7mm Rem Mag: does this mean that I don't really have a true Weatherby (for example, not being a 7mm Wby Mag)? Added to that basic package, I had the Custom Shop take off the wood furniture for a composite stock (green on black), added the glass bedding and bedding plate, the Accubrake and the recoil pad upgrade.

I added to it a US Optics SN-3 3.2-17x58mm scope to it for better accuracy at distance. Weatherby's Custom Shop added the mount and rings for the scope after the other custom work was completed.

She's an accurate little spitfire.

Sorry, but I don't have the computer for posting photos -- at least not yet. When I figure out how to add photos, I'll edit this post with her photos.

Hi all... Just got my first RoyToy about a month ago... found a Vanguard Sporter in 300Roy NIB clearanced to $400. I had been wanting to get the same rifle in 257Roy, but what's a guy to do when he sees a Sporter sitting there for four bills???? It has a Conquest 3-9 topping it off on a set of Tallys. Factory target showed .792" I'm hoping to make it back out this weekend for it's second go round. I loaded some 220g Gamekings to get things started....

Robert, you are ready to roll with that setup. That is a nice looking rifle for the money and should be a shooter. Have you bought any slower powders for reloading yet?

Not yet Charlie. I still have some 4350 and 4831 to get through. I am looking for a good powder to use in my three mags (300Roy, 300WM and 338WM) that can effectively take care of at least 180g through 250g pills in all three cartridges and 150g-250g would be even better. I'm getting awfully sick of having such a buffet of powders to deal with. The Norma powders seem to be popular on here but is not all that readily available on our side of the pond... or at least not that I've seen around here. RL powders seem to be popular so I'm thinking of giving one of those a whirl.
