    Default 338-378 versus 338 Lapua

Thinking about geting into the long range shooting game after reading some of the posts here. I have narrowed it down to one of the .338 cartridges. I can get the Weatherby with no wait but havent a clue where to find the Lapua. Anybody have any insight and where to pick up a rifle for the Lapua? Or am I going to have to custom build?

If you want the Lapua you will have to go custom. I thought about this and beat that discission to death. In the end I had "TRGRMAN" Joe Starnes of "Long Shot Percision" Conrad MT. build mine. I would not change a thing. Joe steered me right and was vary fair on price. I drove up to get it, TRGRMAN and Smokin99 took me out to the range. First day I was banging steel at 1000, 1100, 1250... and even rang the 36" gong at 2100 yards.

I have nothing against the 338-378 but I will tell you this. You will love the Lapua and the Lapua Brass.

can't say much about either caliber, I had a .338 win mag. But I can tell you that TRGRRMAN / JOe is a great guy. He is doing a custom build for me on my Browning A-bolt in .300 win per his recommendation. It's the gun I am going to use to cut my teeth (gain experience) with in "Long Range Shooting." Then down the road if I am ready to step up I will go to Joe again for a custom in .338 Lapua or the .375 Chey Tac perhaps.

Stainless Mark V. Joe had it and I think it was a 378 based action. But I believe any long action will work. You just need a 378 mag box, open the bolt face up and install a 378 ejector and lengthen the bolt stop slot.

I would go the Lapua route if for no other reason than the Brass. That aside I have not seen a 338/378 that would CONSISTANTLY shoot as well as a Lapua.

If you are looking to go the most affordable route, look for a used accumark and rebarrel with a plain no frills #3 Shilen and get 100 Lapua cases. The barrel and brass will give up about the same time then you will throughly have the disease and spend the money for a all out LR built on the Mark V action you will already have.

I have rechambered a .340 accumark and it performed well.
