Question Talley Vanguard Mounts with Nikon Bushmaster II 3-9x50mm

My lady just put a Vanguard LazerGuard .308 on layaway.

We will use it for deer/elk hunting and I am 57 years old. I don;t think I want to pack anything out from a 1000 yds!

So I am thinking a Nikon Bushmaster II 3-9x50mm should be enough.

I am also thinking I will buy the Talley mounts direct from Talley. Someone has said the medium mounts will mount the 50mm just fine.

Any inputs to help me out?

Some say lapping is necessary. I suppose I should be prepared for that? What could I use to check the mating? Whiteout?

You can check the mating with some talcum powder on the scope rings. Look for even contact, obviously. I've had Talley rings need nothing, and I've seen them need some mild lapping. Lapping kits are inexpensive or you can make your own with 2000 grit emery paper and a 1" oak dowel that is very straight. Just be careful how much you lap.

As for the height, best option is to call Talley. They will know.
