Default 30-378 ? Good hunting cartrige? Rifle?

I have never owned a Weatherby but always wanted to. Life Kids expenses, the usual. But now my company has grown and the kids are out the door. I found a really nice older one chambered in 30-378. I know that is a brutal cartridge that kicks like a mule. While I would not enjoy bench rest shooting it (That's what 308's and 6.5 CM's are for) I don't mind recoil especially when hunting. I have priced the ammo from 100-150 a box and brass for about 5o bucks a box. I have reloading gear but Im not sure its worth it if I use it for hunting only. I can pick it up for about $600.00 and its in very good shape. What does the group think? Click image for larger version.

    Hi Chuck,

The pictures didnt make it through the post. Is it a weatherby Mark V it a lazermark. 600 is a tremendously cheap price for a 30-378. Its worth asking how many rounds its fired. You can burn up a 30-378 barrel.

Its a very effective cartridge. I have several friends with them. They typically take 1-5 shots a year with them. They buy the weatherby ammo and it works really well. I think Sako also makes rifles inWby chambers. I know a different guy who thought he was buying a Wby and later realized it was a Sako. Fortunately Sakos are excellent too.

    I can see the photos.

    What length barrel?
No point in a 30-378 with a 24 inch barrel.

You will likely not want to shoot it without a muzzle brake on it. I can't tell if that one is ported or not, but I don't see a brake on it.
In theory a 30-378 has twice as much recoil as a 300 Weatherby, which is already as much as most people want to shoot without a brake.

Consider that in the purchase, though it's cheap enough you could even rebarrel it if you needed to.

For $600 it's a steal. I have shot several animals with mine. As for the recoil slap a muzzle break on it and it kicks like a .30-30 Accuracy, speed and range are absolutely outstanding. And the 30 caliber offers a wide range of bullet weights. I like Berger 210 grain VLD's in mine. H-1000 powder around 100 grains and your price for ammo is very reasonable.

One caveat- with the muzzle break the noise is hideous. This thing will bong your gong real well. Use hearing protection!!
    Good luck.
