Thread: My year just got started off with a bang!

I hear you, Jeff. I'm not saying this is a failure, at all. I can't fathom a one shot kill with a 20yd tracking job (which consisted of moving so I could see around the rock outcrop he disappeared behind) as anything but a resounding success. What puzzles me is the difference in performance between different situations. I shot a doe through the ribs/lungs broadside at 25yds, with a 168gr BT from my 30-06 last season. That bullet is going fully 250fps or more faster than this 180gr .323cal, but it punched through, leaving a half-dollar sized exit hole, and both lungs were toast, with no fanfare. Curiously, that doe ran about 75yds, though she was dead before she took the first step. I'm probably overthinking the whole thing, but it makes me wonder how we get such different reactions and bullet performance out of what is arguably the same bullet design. Heck, Nosler says the 180gr .323cal is suitable for elk, even, which I believed up to this point. Now I'm wondering if maybe a 200gr Partition is the order of the day should this rifle ever accompany me on an elk trip.

I don't think I'm going to switch right now, but I'm going to be anxious to see how this bullet performs on future kills. Thanks for your insight.

I will offer these three things.

There will never , ever, be two shots the same. Angle, amount of meat first, bone first, density of meat or bone, animal weight, hide thickness and physical condition, impact velocity etc.

Two like bullet designs of different weight and caliber will always preform differently also. Most times a lot differently.

Tipped bullets are designed to expand, I would like a tip for impact velocities below 1600 fps, but not above for my taste.

Thought I'd come back to this thread and post a final update. After 13mo, my taxidermist, who is slow but good, called me to come get my buck. Here he is watching me work in my office:
