Thread: 270 Weatherby barrel twist

  1. Default 270 Weatherby barrel twist

    Hi, I'm having a rechambering in a MK V to 270 Wby.

I want to mainly use 150 grs or heavier slugs in this caliber. (Big Game)
So, my gunsmith suggest a Lilja Barrel with 1-8" twist, instead of the regular 1-10" twist.
    Any thoughts, pro and cons?

No cons, unless you want to shoot lightweight bullets at some point (100-110).

Note that Weatherby just went to a 1:8.5 twist in the 7mm Wby. I think they did that just to get me to buy another one.
I actually have one, but an aftermarket barrel.

Hmm, interesting. I'm planning to test even 170grs Bergers in 270Wby.

So, I went for a Lilja barrel in SS with 1-8" twist in my rifle. I bet the lightest I will shoot will be 140grs or so.

You might be surprised. I would not be shocked if you could do 130s.
That would especially be true of longer bullets such as a Berger.
However, that's not why you're building it.
